Pottery, transfer and etched, 0.5L, inlaid lid, signed by M. Hein.
Text:
“Hopfen u. Malz, Gott erhalt’s.”
(Hops and malt, may God preserve them.)
The hexagram decoration on the lid, often mistaken to be the Jewish Star of David, is actually a German brewing symbol seen frequently on beer steins produced through the early 20th century.
This stein can be found both with and without the dates “1886” and “1911” in white banners on either side of the portrait, commemorating the New York City brewery’s 25th anniversary.
